A Follow-up Workshop - Spelt Bread and Sourdough

Yesterday Tobi, Tania, Jaci and Lyndal got together to do Tobi's Follow-up Bread Making Workshop.

Us humans are a clever bunch, capable of creativity and innovation, however all too often it’s easy to become intimidated by the mass of information floating out there in the universe. Do you ever get the feeling that you’d really like to do something but just lack the knowledge to do it or feel the only option for learning is to attend expensive courses being taught by a professional?

Well our theory is that between us all, we have a massive amount of knowledge and the life skills to be able to jump in and give lots of things a red-hot go. Sure it may not be perfect the first time, but it’s immeasurably better than not attempting it at all, and along the way we’ll learn from mistakes and gain confidence and pleasure from achieving something new.

So here’s the deal. Set up a small group (four is about right, depending on the project) of your nearest and dearest to get together to learn a new skill, or pass on one that someone in your group already has. It might be a few hours one afternoon or a whole weekend for a bigger project.

There are only two rules… well three…

1. Register your group here on the “Whispered Workshops” website (refer to the Instructions for details) with a description of your project and then a report back on the outcomes

2. Everyone in your group has to commit to facilitate their own group to share the newfound knowledge with at least three other people (and repeat step 1)

3. Having fun is compulsory!

The basis of the idea is that no one has to be the expert and that learning is half the fun. By keeping track on the website, let’s see how far we can spread the knowledge, and like Chinese Whispers, find out how that knowledge expands and mutates along the way as each new person to engage brings something new to their group.

A few project ideas to get you started:

- Sourdough bread making

- Simple cheese making

- Knitting a beanie

- Cooking Paella or making macaroons

- Writing a short story

- Servicing a lawnmower engine…

If you get involved more than once, you don’t even need to take on a new project each time; you could facilitate the same one several times with different people and learn new things each time. The possibilities are endless but it all starts with us all connecting with our communities and just giving it a go!
